Inspiring Options for Holistic Achievement
Our pupils are encouraged to set high standards, be it in the classroom, onstage or on the sports field. This ambitious, challenging approach is reflected in the exciting co-curricular activities we offer. Through a wealth of activities spanning sports, arts and other areas, learners hone their talents, explore new disciplines, and develop the skills needed to succeed in school and life beyond.
Sports
Our sports programme is carefully designed to promote physical skills, building confidence and competence in a range of activities.
Sports form part of the core curriculum, teaching learners to select and apply their abilities, tactics and compositional ideals to activities that require varying approaches and thought processes. Learners will set targets for themselves, develop perseverance, understand what it takes to succeed, and compete in teams or as individuals, while also acknowledging the success of others. We encourage them to take initiative, lead activities and improve aspects of their own performance. Ultimately, learners are empowered to make informed decisions about the importance of exercise in their lives and develop positive attitudes toward physical activity.
The sporting activities available will vary as the children move through the school. Options will include swimming, athletics, gymnastics, dance and team games such as football, netball, rounders, tennis, hockey and touch rugby.
Drama
Drama is taught by our Head of Music and Drama specialist teacher. It is a wonderful opportunity for our learners to gain confidence and self-esteem, while also extending their imagination. In addition, learners are empowered to develop key life skills, such as public speaking and communication.
Music
Our comprehensive music programme aims to develop children’s musical sensitivity and understanding. Through activities focused on the core aspects of performing, composing, listening and appraising, learners will build a broad knowledge base along with the skills to participate in a wide range of musical activities. Ivy House offers music through the core curriculum, extra-curricular activities and one-on-one lessons with talented peripatetic music teachers.
Clubs and Activities
On a typical day at Ivy House School, our pupils have a choice of at least three extracurricular activities. To explore the activities and clubs available, please click on the sections below to read more.
Chelsea Ballet School, a company dedicated to enhancing the lives of children through dance, offers lessons through the curriculum and after-school sessions. Lessons are open to the lower classes (Nursery to Year 3), with the option of Musical Theatre club for learners in Key Stage Two.
At Chess club, children are taught the rules of the game and practise and hone their abilities by playing opponents. Not only do learners develop strategy skills, but the game also fosters the mental dexterity they need to solve problems, analyse consequences, and formulate future tactics.
An after-school choir is available to pupils of all ages, and learners are given the chance to participate in local musical events such as ‘The Proms’ at St. Jude’s. The choir is run by our Head of Music and Drama, Paula Masterton.
Year 1 to Year 6 run twice a week in Golders Hill Park.
In Environmental Club, children will sew and tend to plants in the Ivy House School vegetable patch. They will learn all about environmental sustainment, whether in gardens or in the wildlife we see in our local surroundings.
Rhythmic Gymnastics is taught by Ellen Watson, a former Ribbon/Hoop Choreographer for the GB Rhythmic Team that competed in the 2012 London Olympics. Gymnastics is taught in the core curriculum from Nursery to Year 2 and as an extracurricular from Pre-Reception to Year 6.
Peripatetic lessons in piano and violin are available during school hours. If your child would like lessons in an instrument other than those offered, please register your interest by either completing the Enquiry Form (see below) or speaking to the school office.
LAMDA is led by Little Acorns Theatre Academy. Little Acorns offers coaching to pupils for the LAMDA exams in Performance (Acting).
This club, run by Little House of Science, introduces learners to exciting science topics and allows them to engage their scientific minds while furthering their curriculum-based knowledge.
Little Inventors develop educational programmes aimed at addressing the development of 21st century skills while building confidence, curiosity, and inspiring the generations that will build the future. They use past experience in the tech world to create exciting activities across engineering, arts, and technology subjects.
Peaceful Play Yoga & Mindfulness lessons weave yoga movements together with breathing exercises, relaxation and mindfulness. Children’s balance, physical awareness, posture and self-confidence all improve with regular yoga practice. Pupils explore ways to recognise and manage big emotions, such as anxiety, fear and frustration, while taking time out of the school day for stillness and relaxation.
